This is a work in progress. Any suggestions for additions are welcome.
There are some duplications in the sections below because some works fit under more than one category.
Although this bibliography is intended as background to the New testament (1st and 2nd centuries CE) it does extend these limits. Items have been included from other periods before and after the New Testament where I think they add to our knowledge and understanding of the Roman army as an institution for new testament background.
